Theresa Smith

Theresa earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Sciences from Northern Illinois University where she majored in Political Science, English and minored in Spanish. After graduating with University Honors, Theresa received her Juris Doctorate from DePaul University where she specialized in Family and Child Law Studies.

 During her tenure in law school, Theresa was a selected recipient of the Schiller, DuCanto, and Fleck Family Law Fellowship which allowed her to prosecute child abuse and neglect matters in Cook County.


While in law school, Theresa volunteered in the Domestic Violence Pilot Project, which allowed her to help clients file Emergency Orders of Protection. Further, Theresa also participated in DePaul University’s Family Law Clinic where she used her 711law student license to reach favorable outcomes for clients in both dissolution of marriage and domestic violence proceedings. Throughout law school, Theresa clerked at a boutique family law firm where she gained private practice experience in all aspects of custody, dissolution, and real estate proceedings.

After being admitted to the Illinois Bar and the United States District Court, Theresa worked as an Assistant State’s Attorney in Ogle County where she prosecuted misdemeanor, domestic violence, and traffic cases. This experience helped Theresa gain criminal law experience and significant trial experience. While an Assistant State’s Attorney, Theresa was able to successfully get guilty verdicts on two jury trials. As a prosecutor, Theresa was devoted to ensuring that all people in the criminal justice system were treated fairly and with respect. 

When she’s not working, Theresa enjoys watching football, playing with her dog-Sadie, reading, and spending time with her family.
